NIGHT WALK AT FAIRMONT AUSTIN INVITES VIEWERS TO DREAM BIG ABOUT WALLER CREEK
Art installation enjoyed by thousands during Creek Show 2017 is reimagined for a new site

Night Walk at Fairmont Austin is a site-specific art installation designed by dwg. Located on Waller Creek below the new Fairmont Austin Red River Canopy Walk at 101 Red River Street, the striking commission is comprised of thousands of bright pink flags combined with dynamic lighting and custom sound that highlights the transforming nature of Waller Creek and the new Red River Canopy Walk in an immersive, dreamlike experience. The Red River Canopy Walk is an elevated walkway connecting Fairmont Austin with the Austin Convention Center designed by the internationally renowned Thomas Phifer and Partners. That’s the same firm serving as lead architects on the new Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park, currently under construction as part of the larger Waller Creek project being spearheaded by the Waller Creek Conservancy (WCC) and the City of Austin.

Fully funded by Fairmont Austin developer Manchester Texas Financial Group, Night Walk will be open to the public beginning Friday evening, March 23. The installation will run every evening through April 15. The largest Fairmont in the U.S., and the largest hotel in Austin, Fairmont Austin boasts 1,048 guest rooms and adds 140,000 square feet of convention and event space to downtown and is directly adjacent to Waller Creek and Palm Park.

Night Walk is based on dwg.’s 2017 Creek Show installation entitled Night Garden, which was commissioned by the Waller Creek Conservancy for their annual temporary art exhibition that raises public awareness for the on-going transformation of Waller Creek. Waller Creek Conservancy is a non-profit organization that partners with the City of Austin to implement a restored creek environment, introduce new and redesigned park spaces to the area, and connect the trail network from Lady Bird Lake north to 15th Street.

The ambitious vision for the future of Waller Creek requires the support of the entire local community to be successful. Neighboring businesses such as Fairmont Austin bring economic vitality to the district and local designers such as dwg. lend their creativity and talent to a renewed urban landscape.

“dwg. thoroughly enjoyed exhibiting Night Garden during Creek Show 2017,” said dwg. President Daniel Woodroffe. “We are thrilled that Night Walk will be experienced by even more Austinites and visitors in this unique setting. Even though the potential of Waller Creek has not yet been fully realized, what excites me is that it’s already becoming a place known for pushing the boundaries of where the built and natural environments meet.”
