ULI Award of Distinction

Royal Blue Parklet

Royal Blue Parklet on a typical afternoon

During an awards ceremony at this morning’s Austin chapter ULI Breakfast, the Royal Blue Parklet was honored with the 2013 Award of Distinction for Public Impact.

The annual ULI Awards of Distinction define the standard of excellence in the practice of real estate development in the Austin region, by recognizing developments that exemplify best practices in design, construction, economic viability, as well as marketing and management. This year’s Awards included three categories: Public Impact, which includes any property that is for public use; New Development; and Redevelopment, which includes commercial, residential, hotel, mixed use, retail or industrial / warehouse spaces. Circuit of the Americas was the recipient of the New Development award, and Hampton Inn “The Lavaca” received the Redevelopment award.

Fashioned after pocket parks made popular in San Francisco, the Parklet occupies two angled parking spaces along Congress Avenue between 6th & 7th Streets in front of Royal Blue Grocery, and features a deck seating area and large planter elements. The Parklet provides seating and respite from the busy sidewalk and allows Royal Blue customers a place to relax and enjoy their purchases. The Parklet has been extremely popular since it’s opening over a year ago and is widely used by downtown residents, employees and visitors.

The Royal Blue Grocery Parklet was designed by dwg. and made possible through a collaborative and innovative process. The project would not have been possible without the visionary efforts of Royal Blue Grocery owners George Scariano and Craig Staley, the Downtown Austin Alliance, Council Member Chris Riley and Big Red Dog Engineers.

If you haven’t experienced the Parklet for yourself, we invite you to drop by Royal Blue Grocery on Congress, grab a coffee or a sandwich and take advantage of this unique downtown amenity.
