dwg. designed the landscape master plan for the renovation of the Captain Shepard House at the Gage Hotel in Marathon, Texas. Originally built in 1899, this historic house offers hotel guests more private accommodation as well as an ideal backdrop for special events. Challenged with providing a formal English garden in the harsh desert climate, dwg. designed a space that creatively and carefully balances formal garden layout with a rich, native planting palette. Local plants and hardscape materials were used to reduce transportation costs and the new landscape resulted in an 80% reduction of water use on the property.
After the success of the Captain Shepard House, the client engaged dwg. to create a landscape master plan for the expansion of the Gage Hotel campus-wide. Additions to the existing hotel, grounds and guest house include expanded event and outdoor dining spaces, creation of a spa and fitness center and additional guest accommodations. The new plan builds upon the existing aesthetic and seeks to create a variety of outdoor gathering spaces that feel welcoming and lush, even within the harsh west Texas environment.
