dwg. served as the landscape architect for the renovation of Hill Country Galleria, a mixed-use commercial center in the community of Bee Cave, Texas. Hill Country Galleria is a community-driven space which features a unique combination of civic, retail, office and entertainment uses.
The goals of the project were to redefine the narrative for the space, create a fresh and compelling gathering spot for the region and encourage pedestrians to explore the center. Retail sociology and psychology strategies were combined with landscape architecture, architecture, lighting and signage and wayfinding to enhance the project’s brand awareness. The transformation successfully redefines the energy of the place and reinvigorates the civic heart of Bee Cave.
The renovation better serves users, addressing pedestrian priority through a close focus on human comfort and shade. Major emphasis was placed on gathering, utilizing movable furnishings and outdoor dining spaces to encourage assembly. Lighting was carefully and artistically used to help reinforce positive emotions for users throughout the site. The function of the town square was redefined through flexibility, adaptability and programming to establish the civic heart for the center. The Civic Green features a host of community events including a Saturday night concert series, outdoor movie screenings, summer camps, holiday parties and festivals.
The updated design enhances the planting conditions of Hill Country Galleria. A broader and more diverse plant palette was applied and pervious, green space was expanded. Full depth excavation was conducted on the planting beds to import an appropriate soil mix to overcome the naturally high bedrock associated with the site. A Silva Cell modular suspended pavement system was installed to support healthy tree root growth. The turf grass used for the Civic Green is engineered for optimum drainage and maintenance through high-traffic pedestrian conditions.
